Riser management

What is riser cabling management and how can it benefit your company? Riser cabling is data and phone cabling that originates from the minimum point of entry(MPOE) usually located in the basement and is distributed to telco closets on each floor. From there cables are distributed to individual offices for phone, fax and internet service. It is essentially the central nervous system or "backbone" of all communications within a building.

Prior to deregulation of the telecom industry, riser cabling was maintained by the local telephone company, ie. Verizon. While deregulation evened the playing field for smaller telecom companies and encouraged competition it has left riser cabling in a state of disarray. Adding to the problem is the fact that in non riser managed buildings, tenants hire their own network cabling companies to perform work. This leads to disorganized telco closets, security risks, downtime for tenants, abandoned cabling and fire hazards.

With our riser management solutions in place, access to riser cabling and telco closets would be restricted to Verizon and New Wave Communications. This alone immediately improves upon network and building security measures and creates accountability. Tenants can still use their preferred vendor to make changes to cabling within their suite, but any alterations to riser cabling and telco closets would be performed by New Wave Communications.

Over the past several years riser management has become a growing trend for property management companies with positive results.
